Dental anxiety is one of most common reasons why people avoid making appointments. If you think back to your first appointment, you were probably nervous. Therefore, it could be argued that dental anxiety is inherent. Before we sink our teeth into these 6 tips on how to overcome dental anxiety, it’s important to understand that your hesitations are completely justified. We’re here to help you become more comfortable so you can take proper care of your dentures. You only get one set of them, so it’s best to stay on a consistent regiment of Dentist appointments.

1. Speak to Your Dentist
If you are feeling afraid or anxious about going to the dentist, it’s important to reach out and talk to your dental care provider. They may be able to offer helpful advice or provide new treatments that can help with anxiety and fear. If there are certain aspects of the visit that you are particularly nervous about, tell your Dentist! Remember: you’re not alone, and Dentists are trained to talk through the process with you. This will also help your Dentist understand potential triggers during the appointment to avoid discomfort.

2. Distractions
While at the dentist’s office, try distracting yourself by listening to music or podcasts. This can help take your mind off any potential pain or discomfort. Sometimes it can also be helpful to divert your attention from the procedure to analyzing the environment around you. Take a look at the walls, count how many colors you can find in the room or even bring a small item like a fidget spinner or a rubber band to twiddle around in your hands during your appointment.

3. Start Small
When it comes to tackling dental anxiety, starting small can make a big difference. Instead of trying to tackle major procedures all at once, start with smaller, less invasive treatments like teeth cleaning first. Teeth cleanings are recommended twice a year by the The American Dental Health Association. If you haven’t had one in over a year, you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel once you’ve had your first cleaning. The gratification of a clean mouth will help you overcome your next visit.

4. Smile
A smile might seem like an odd tip for overcoming dental anxiety, but studies suggest that smiling during treatment can have a positive effect on how the brain perceives pain. Ever hear the phrase “smile through the pain”? It’s a tactic as old as time that tricks the brain into diverting your focus away from things that may stress you out.

5. Stop Negative Thoughts, Mind Over Matter
Being aware of our own thoughts is key in managing dental anxiety. If you notice negative thoughts creeping into your head while at the dentist, stop them right away and try replacing them with more pleasant ones. Think about some of your fondest memories, or the last concert you attended, or try to picture the last best meal you had and think about the aromas. Food is a great incentivize because that’s primarily why you’re at the Dentist’s office in the first place! You have to keep your teeth clean in order to keep enjoying the flavors you love.

6. Try Something New
For some people who suffer from dental anxiety disorder, finding something new that helps. Bring headphones and watch some of your favorite videos on your phone of family, friends, or pets! If you have an emotional support animal, speak to your Dentist about if you’re allowed to bring them.
